TORORO

DISTRICT OF

District and City of Tororo

Tororo is a poor and rural district located on the East side of Uganda. It shares border with Kenya. The main city is Tororo. The population in 2014 was 41.906 inhabitants. Neighbours from small villages around the city of Tororo go there everyday for  work. They live mostly from farming. Just like in most countries in Africa, malaria is responsible of many deaths and diseases, causing physical and cerebral disabilities.

PROBLEM

The poverty in the rural zones from Uganda is so extreme that families have no other option but choosing between spending money on basic things, such as food, or spending it on healthcare for their disabled children. They can't pay for transport either to go to the main cities and get a medical checkup, or to pay for orthopedic material such as positioning chairs, due the isolation of their villages. If kids don't see the doctor, controllable diseases can develop and cause infections, deaths or disabilities. If kids with disabilities don't have access to adapted material, they can't go to school and must stay at home, disturbing their families who, in many cases, end up abandoning them.

SOLUTION

Luckily , there are some NGOs and associations who work hard to include people with diseases into society and try to offer them a proper healthcare and adapted material. One of this associations is the hospital I've joined to create a positioning chair, Benedictine Eye Hospital, and the school who will be receiving the chairs, Agururu Primary School. Alongside these NGOs, I've created the UBUNTU CHAIR.

THE HARSH REALITY

"I saw a woman once, just outside Tororo that was hiking up a big hill to collect rocks, that she carried back down to road side, where she beat them with another rock in order to create gravel.  All this time carrying a toddler on her back and two of her children playing at the roadside.  When she had a big enough pile of gravel, she would sell it... For 1USD per ton!"
